THE 4C’s…COLOUR

Diamond quality is an important factor to consider while purchasing any form of diamond jewellery. The quality of diamonds can be graded on four factors, also referred to as the 4C’s. The 4C’s consist of the diamonds cut, clarity, colour, and carat weight. Whilst trying to find the perfect piece of diamond jewellery It is very important to know the characteristics of these precious stones to ensure you find the perfect diamond.

Here we take a look into Diamond Colour.

Diamond colour is all about what you can’t see. Diamonds are valued by how closely they approach colourlessness – the less colour, the higher their value. (The exception to this is fancy colour diamonds, such as pinks and blues, which lie outside this colour range.) Most diamonds found in jewellery products run from colourless to near-colourless, with slight hints of yellow or brown.

The colour scale for diamonds is industry standard. The scale begins with the letter D, representing colourless, and continues with increasing presence of colour to the letter Z, or light yellow or brown. Each letter grade has a clearly defined range of colour appearance. Diamonds are colour-graded by comparing them to stones of known colour under controlled lighting and precise viewing conditions. The colour grade chart below describes each characteristic for each of the colour grades.
